We kick off our first annual Film Festival at 7:00 PM with Guest Speaker Andrew Ritchie
Andrew Ritchie: Breaking into Hollywood
Sharing his experiences and lessons learned in his career, Andrew touches on subjects such as making your own films, working with icons, setting etiquette, as well as fun anecdotes and stories experienced on set. He touches on budgets and how they grow and how technology is always advancing but relationships and how you collaborate with others does not. One of the many takeaways he has learned thus far was on The BFG. How even the likes of Steven Spielberg, who has been making movies for 40 years still runs into some of the same issues as amateur film makers.
Feature Film: This Is Home, a documentary created by Var Bhalla
Synopsis: This is not just a story about devastation. It’s not a story about tragedy, oil, or the environment. This is a story about how a husband and wife immigrated from India to Northern Alberta to start a new life. It’s a story about the different people that came to call Fort McMurray home and how 30 years after the filmmaker was born there, his home-town almost burned to the ground. From the ashes of one of the worst natural disasters in Canadian history, this documentary explores the restoration of hope in a community that faced tragedy and devastation. Var Bhalla (narrator and guiding character) returns to his hometown after ‘the Beast’ ravaged the city.
BIO: Born in and raised in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Var Bhalla moved to Vancouver to pursue his passions in film and broadcast. After working in the broadcast industry and launching his own lifestyle TV show, the tragedy of the Fort McMurray Wildfires struck back in his home town. He knew he had to respond with a point of view that wasn’t being showcased in the news. THIS IS HOME became his first documentary.
